A lot of people mistakenly assume that they can use the regular car battery for their recreational vehicles like boats and golf carts instead of deep cycle batteries. As much as the basic chemistry of how they work might be the same, they are essentially two very different batteries and they work just as differently. Differences in Use

A deep cycle battery is used in recreational vehicles. They are also used to store solar power in large solar systems. They are therefore used for high storage needs. In solar systems, the solar power produced during the day is stored in the solar deep cycle batteries at night. The biggest difference between deep cycle batteries and the regular lead acid car batteries is the amount of current that passes through them over a particular period of time. A car battery generates a large amount of current in a short amount of time. This huge spurt of power is used to start the car, from where the alternator takes over to provide the rest of the energy that the car might need.

Amount of Current Generated

On the other hand a deep cycle battery is meant to generate a steady amount of current over a longer period of time. It is also designed to recharge constantly as it is regularly discharged because of this constant use of energy. A deep cycle battery can be used to provide that power surge of current that car batteries produce but it is not as effective when used as a car battery. This is why deep cycle batteries have thick plates while car batteries have thin plates. It is important to keep all this in mind as you look for the best type of battery for whatever the function might be.
